Himalayan salt lamps do they really offer more of an important to your health beside just ambiance at home. I’ve wondered how this lamp really works and if I do purify the air not just a soothing red glow. I started with using one of these lamps in my office. Now I have one in my living room and bedroom so I figured they earned their own post.
Salt lamps or Himalayan Pink Salt (HPS) are basically large pieces of pure Himalayan Salt with a small bulb inside. They can be solid pieces of salt or decorative baskets filled with larger crystals of salt. I found mine at the local Bed, Bath & Beyond for a decent price ranging from 15-40 dollars. These beauties offer a pleasant warm glow when lit and may be useful for indoor air quality.
HPS are made from unadulterated, food grade, Himalayan salt crystals, these attractive lamps have gained huge popularity recently and there are many benefits attributed to them. But are these benefits actually backed by science?
Do Salt Lamps Really Generate Negative Ions?
I was acutally shocked when I first showed my father my lamp and he knew what it was for stating it removes neagtive Ions out of the air. Huh?. I have read so many claims that salt lamps are natural negative ion generators. What are negative ions? Let’s think back to elementary school when we were first learning about how science worked. When we are having a thunderstorm and you hear the thunder both positive and negative ions in the air when they collide Boom! Thunder. Positively stimulated ions are also known as cations, while negatively charged ions are anions. The positive or negative charge makes ions able to move and bond easily. Places like beaches and lakes negative ions are naturally produced up to 10,000 negative ions per cubic centimeter while cities negative ion levels are as low as 100 ions per cubic centimeter well that doesn’t sound good.
Do Salt Lamps Generate Negative Ions?
Yes! Subsequently positive ions are often formed by electronic devices like computers, TVs, and even your vacuum can worsen problems like allergies, stress and sleep trouble. Negative ions can neutralize positive ions (they bond together) and help cleanse the air.
The Benefits of HPS
1. Great Night Light
Research has shown that different colors of light affect the body in different ways. Such as avoiding blue light after sunset because it can interfere with circadian rhythm.
2. May Improve Air Quality
Salt lamps due to their hygroscopic properties, may improve the air in your home. They can attract impurities, toxins, and pollutant in the air.
3. Light and Color Therapy Benefits
They can help boost mood and energy levels, especially for those with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The soft orange hues are one of the soothing colors often used to calm mood and increase focus. One of the other reasons I bought mine!
